5 Tips for Driving in Inclement Weather

By Jeff Metler, Attorney at Law

As a Utahn, you’re no stranger to driving in difficult weather. It snows more than twice the national average here in Utah!

However, the state does go months without seeing any snow, so a refresher on safe winter driving practices never huts.

Here are five tips for driving in inclement weather:

#1 – Plan out your drive.

Winter driving is often more stressful and takes longer to reach your destination than during the summer months. Be sure to check the weather and road conditions before you leave so you can prepare accordingly.

#2 – Leave earlier than usual.

In the summer, you likely don’t have to provide yourself with extra time to reach your destination. However, in the winter, it’s always best to give yourself a buffer just in case you run into any issues along the way.

#3 – Slow down.

It’s important to drive slow when conditions are less than ideal. As long as you give yourself plenty of extra time to reach your destination, you won’t be late for any commitments.

#4 – Leave extra space between vehicles.

When driving in the rain or on wet roads, it’s a good idea to double your driving distance.

If you’re on the road when it’s snowing or there are snowy road conditions, give yourself no less than a football field length of space between your car and the one ahead of you. This may seem like overkill, but we assure you, it’s not.

#5 – Pull over if you need to.

Above all, trust your gut. If you begin to feel the road is unsafe to drive on, pull over to a secure spot that is completely off the road. It’s best not to take unnecessary risks behind the wheel, so follow your instincts if you begin to feel uneasy.

Driving in the winter can be tough. If another’s negligence caused you to sustain injuries in a car accident, we’re here to help you recover the compensation you deserve.
